- explain and use mental math strategies and personal strategies to estimate and determine the sum or difference of two 3 & 4 digit numbers.
- use and describe an estimation strategy
- estimate solutions for a given story problem.
- describe situations where an estimate (rather than an exact answer) would be good enough.
- figure out the answer using mental math strategies
- act out, model and solve story problems using concrete materials, pictures, words and symbols.
- create and solve add/ sub story problems using numbers and situations that are meaningful to them.
- after specific instruction in the four strategies for adding / subtracting, students will choose a personal strategy and demonstrate it using concrete materials, pictures, words and symbols.
- solve one-step add / subtraction equations using symbols to represent an unknown number.
- explain the purpose of the symbol for the unknown.
- record equations with a symbol for the unknown.
- create equations to match a given story problem
- solve a given equation with one unknown using manipulatives & a variety of strategies
- create a story problem with an equation for one unknown
