Our students have been busy doing a lot of group work around Number Sense. We have been working with numbers up to 100. We have been skip counting by 2s, 5s and 10s, both mentally and with manipulatives. We have been experimenting with counting different amounts, to discover which groupings make for more efficient counting methods, and figuring out what to do when we have left overs.
For example, in small groups, we each took a bag with mystery items in it. They contained 20-50 things from around the school. We dumped them out and recorded our estimations. Then we organized our items into groups of 2, 5 or 10 and practiced our skip counting. Sometimes we had to combine our counting methods (counted by 2s then 1s to reach the final number). We then recorded all of our information on our chart paper and took turns drawing a picture of our counting methods. (Try this at home!!)
We also spent a little time setting up our math journals. We are going to use these for open-ended questions, such as "show me what you know about..."
We will be moving onto even/ odd and ordinal numbers in the upcoming weeks! Stay tuned :)
